Dizzy Dean. This week Dean Heller scrambled to distance himself from Trump’s border omnishambles. If, as seems likely, Heller is belittled and demeaned in his own state by Trump this weekend, Ron Brownstein states an obvious point Heller may (or may not) want to consider: “…by any reasonable standard, Capitol Hill Republicans marched themselves in this quagmire by either actively endorsing, or failing to effectively resist, almost every earlier step Trump has taken to redefine the party around his insular nationalism.”
On the bright side, from Heller’s point of view, anyway, with but a single tweet Trump killed any chance of an immigration bill passing the House. With no bill moving over to the Senate, Heller will have more time to concentrate on the core issue of his campaign: Being a-scared of California.
Prison-industrial fail. If there’s one manner of public infrastructure project this country has been able to get behind over the last several decades, it’s building jails. And yet, the ACLU finds, Nevada facilities for youthful offenders is, eh, not so much, as Michael Lyle reports in the Current this morning.
Get in on the ground floor! Stem cell therapy is going to be HUUUUGE so everyone should just invest in it right now. Just make sure you read Dana Gentry’s story in the Current first.
Undercurrents. On the blog: Charters, vouchers & neo-vouchers earn Nevada an F; Sisolak on insurance having to cover pre-existing conditions (he’s for it); The Reid Machine, Clean Energy Division, has some ideas.
Aunt Neena’s weighty decisions. This mostly just raises the question: Since she endorsed Ross Miller instead of her nephew four years ago, what’s keeping Adam Laxalt’s aunt from endorsing Sisolak?
Better quit dithering and buy that ’65 Princeton Reverb now. The Supreme Court says states can make online retailers charge sales tax. Nevada’s general fund might make a buck or two.
Mini-Fox. Yes, the local NBC affiliate, which is also and more importantly the local Sinclair affiliate, is being forced to run factually inaccurate Trump propaganda during local newscasts. (Disclosure: I worked for that station for a few years under its previous ownership, and then worked for Sinclair for, oh, at least 20 minutes.)
Hydrate. It’s hot.
Good luck
