Daily Current: Whose dumb idea was it to have the 4th fall on a Wednesday?

Weird work week, no? Some people, s’pose, might have stockpiled some vacation time and so are taking Monday & Tuesday off or Thursday & Friday off, and cobbling together five days off without losing any pay. Cool! Other people – oh, a conservative guesstimate is between a quarter and a third of Nevada’s workforce – never have any paid vacation days, get just plain old regular pay for working holidays, and are frequently subjected to irregular and unstable scheduling. As the founders intended.

There oughta be a law. Actually, there oughta be a different law. In today’s installment in the Current’s unmatched coverage observing the first year of legal marijuana, Jeniffer Solis reminds us that scientifically sketchy (at best) legal driving impairment standards can mess up your life even if you’re not driving while high.

So where’s the protest this Saturday? In the Current over the weekend… for the second Saturday in a row hundreds of people braved the Las Vegas heat to rally against Donald Trump’s immigration policies, which are deliberately pernicious for a lot of reasons and not least because Republicans are quite confident hatred and xenophobia will sell in November. And for the second Saturday in a row, the Current’s Michael Lyle was there.

The equality state. A New York Times analysis finds that there are five states where women could make up the majority of state legislators if all goes well for them in November, and the state where that is most likely to occur is, far and away, Nevada. But would such a development fundamentally transform Nevada’s hallowed legislative standards and traditions, disrupting time-honored practices and shattering beloved norms? Goodness let’s hope so. (By the way, I couldn’t help but notice that my state o’ origin, Wyoming, is in the bottom five, with women comprising only 11 percent of the legislature. History buffs amongst you will remember that in 1869 Wyoming’s territorial government was the first in the world(!) to specifically guarantee women’s suffrage, and to this day Wyoming’s official motto is “The Equality State,” which sadly hasn’t held up well. And fyi the initial motives were very, very far from high-minded to begin with.)

Speaking of your legislature… The Indy peruses several new state laws that took effect July 1. Yes, hopefully next year’s legislative session will be better.

Fore! The only way to stop a bad guy with a golf ball is with a good guy with a golf ball.

Good luck
