Laborers Union Local 872 endorsed Republican Sen.Dean Heller for reelection, Heller’s campaign announced in a release Tuesday. The release followed an announcement tweeted by the union Sunday.
The union, best known recently for its aggressive support of public financing for the football stadium for the Raiders, has nearly 2,500 members.
“I’m honored to have the support of Local 872 for my reelection campaign,” Heller said in a release. “Nevada’s economy is booming and we cannot afford to turn back the clock and reverse this progress. In Washington, I will continue to stand up for the hardworking men and women in Las Vegas and across Nevada who punch the clock every day to support their families and loved ones.”
In 2016, 872 endorsed Heller’s Democratic challenger, Rep. Jacky Rosen, in her congressional race, as well as Democratic Sen. Catherine Cortez Masto in her successful race against former Rep. Joe Heck.
“Nevadans need good paying jobs and Dean Heller has delivered over and over again – that’s why Local 872 has endorsed him for reelection,” said Tommy White, Business Manager-Secretary Treasurer for Local 872, said in the Heller campaign release. “Senator Heller gets it. He stood up for us when others wouldn’t and killed the Cadillac tax on our health care plans – a tax that would have devastated our ability to provide health care to working families. Dean Heller has fought for jobs and fought for us. He has our full support.”
When Democratic State Senator Richard “Tick” Segerblom opposed the Raiders stadium plans the union further joined the political fray. During this year’s primary for the Clark County Commission District E seat, Segerblom was opposed by Local 872 vice president Marco Hernandez.
