In 2015 the Gay and Lesbian Community Center of Southern Nevada was named the Best Full-Service Community Center in Southern Nevada. It also has the distinct honor of being the only LGBT center in Southern Nevada.

Tomorrow, the Las Vegas City Council will recognize the 25-year anniversary of the Gay and Lesbian Community Center of Southern Nevada on the second floor of Las Vegas City Hall, located at 495 S. Main St at 8:30 a.m.

“You know it’s amazing. This organization was started in 1992 to provide resources for LGBT youth and it’s really grown since then,” said Andre Wade, the center’s executive director. “It goes to show that the need for us still exists and is constantly growing. We are beyond excited to be celebrating 25 years.”

At the ceremony, Councilman Bob Coffin will recognize the efforts of the community-based organization to support and promote the well-being, positive image and human rights of the LGBTQ community in Las Vegas.

Even in Southern Nevada, which Wade describes as one of the more progressive regions in the country on LGBT issues, further education about the LGBT community is always needed.

“The level of acceptance has changed but there are still many parts of the country where it’s not,” Wade said. “You see that played out with the misunderstandings about our community, especially with the transgender community.”

The center offers a myriad of services to the community including free HIV testing, family support, legal services and more.
