The Nevada State Democratic Party is making fun of Sen. Dean Heller for an unusual campaign expenditure: $217 worth of Make America Great Again hats.
The group mocked the purchase, and said it was improperly marked on the Federal Election Commission second quarter report as “MAGA Hats” instead of attributing the expenses to the “Trump Make America Great Again Committee.”
“The same politician who was once so disgusted by Trump’s rhetoric that he rejected Trump’s donation is now spending hundreds of dollars on MAGA hats,” Nevada State Democratic Party spokesperson Sarah Abel said in a statement.
Heller hasn’t always been a Trump supporter.
During a 2015 interview with The Washington Post, Heller said, “Let’s be very clear. I do not support Trump.” When pressed about the potential of Trump being the Republican nominee, he added “I will support the nominee of our party, some more enthusiastically than others.”
While Trump has been in office, Heller has voted 92 percent in line with Trump’s positions, according to a FiveThirtyEight analysis.
Trump has also thrown support toward Heller. He travelled to Las Vegas June 23 to campaign and raise money for him, while also addressing the state GOP convention.
