“It’s not just about Trump,” Steven Horsford said Tuesday night.

Horsford defeated a crowded field of Democrats to get a chance to win back the congressional seat he lost four years ago.

And he’ll be running against the same opponent: Former congressman Cresent Hardy also won his Republican primary Tuesday.

Horsford was the first African-American to represent Nevada in Congress. In 2014, a year when Democrats were crushed in Nevada, Horsford was defeated by Hardy after serving just one term.

“It’s all about hard work we are going to maintain a grassroots issue-oriented campaign by talking to the voters about solutions and how we can bring decency and civility back into the political process,” said Horsford about avoiding a repeat of 2014.

When it became clear Horsford had won, children in the room broke out in dance as the Drake’s “God’s Plan” played.

“Is it over?” asked the volunteers in the room, followed by a lot of cheering.

Horsford entered to applause. “I feel great,” he said. “I am so thankful to voters of Nevada’s fourth and to all the other candidates that put their names forward. Their ideas, their passion… this is what democracy is all about.”

Democrats nationwide are hoping to take over the U.S. House of Representatives. If that happened, Horsford would return to Congress in a different capacity than his earlier term – in the majority.

As a result of “Trump’s reckless agenda, and the Republicans who are abdicating their responsibility to hold him accountable,” Horsford said, many people “are looking for a new Congress who will do their job. And I look forward to working hard to be a part of that new Congress.”

“It’s not just about Trump its about it’s also about us bringing down the cost of prescription drugs, creating jobs here in our community improving education and addressing gun safety those are the issues I’ve heard time and time again from voters so it’s not just about being against Trump but being an advocate for the people of Nevada.”

Democrats have a registration advantage in Nevada’s fourth congressional district.
