Las Vegans are expected to brave a high of 111 degrees Saturday to demonstrate their outrage over President Donald Trump’s efforts to deter immigration by separating asylum-seeking families at the Mexican border.
Trump abandoned the effort after a tidal wave of criticism further threatened the political futures of his supporters in Congress.
Although the policy has been put on ice, the perils of reuniting families loom large.
U.S. Congresswoman Dina Titus is demanding answers as to whether any children seized from their parents are being held in Southern Nevada and legal experts representing parents who haven’t seen their children in as much as a month are equating the government action to kidnapping.
A 10 a.m. protest is scheduled at the Suncoast Hotel and Casino, 9090 Alta Drive. The demonstration is organized by a variety of groups including Battle Born Progress, Protect Our Care Nevada, NARAL Pro-Choice Nevada and PLAN Action Fund.
On Monday, the action moves north to Reno, where Attorney General Jeff Sessions will be speaking to the National Association of School Resource Officers School Safety Conference.
Progressive activists are asking the school safety officers to cancel Sessions’ appearance, saying “it makes NASRO an accomplice in the internment of children at the border.”
They’ll gather at 8 a.m. outside the Peppermill Resort to protest Sessions’ border stance and what they call his desire “to provide additional funding to arm education personnel.. and participate in ‘research’ about school safety…”

President Donald Trump’s planned visit to Nevada this weekend to stump for Republican candidates is expected to draw crowds protesting the family separation policy that has upset even those in his own party, and a few other issues as well.
The Protect Our Care coalition, health care activists opposed to Trump’s efforts to slash the Affordable Care Act, rolled out a new ad in advance of the president’s visit and plan to join Saturday’s protest.
